This global musical phenomenon emerged on August 16, 1958. While attending elementary school, Madonna persuaded her father, Silvio "Tony" P. Ciccone, to allow her to attend ballet lessons. She continued through High School and University with a career as a dancer in mind. 

   After graduating she traveled to New York to pursue her career as a dancer. This allowed Madonna to meet Dan Gilroy who later became her band mate in ‘Breakfast Club’ where she was a vocalist, drummer and guitarist. In 1980 the band Emmy was then formed. Madonna and former boyfriend Stephen Bray produced dance songs that put Madonna in the spotlight for her artistic ability. In 1982, she was discovered by Sire Records and her singing career was launched. April 24, 1982 marked the release of her first hit, the single ‘Everybody’, which peaked at #3 on the US Dance Chart. Her self-titled debut album consisted of several hits but it was her trademark styles, from sound to dress, that captivated girls all over the world.

         

These fans definitely came out to support her second album, “Like a Virgin”, which claimed the number one spot on the US Albums Chart. Despite criticisms of many, her adoration by billions of fans has defined her undying success. Following the release of “Like a Virgin” were the albums, “True Blue” (1986) and “Like a Prayer” (1989), which also reached number one status. Her albums “Erotica” (1992) and “Bedtime Stories” (1994) were not as successful but Madonna regained her momentum from releasing her seventh album “Ray of Light” in 1998. The trend continued as her last four albums “Music” (2000), “American Life” (2003), “Confessions on a Dance Floor” (2005), and “Hard Candy” (2008) reclaimed her number one spots.
